Cal Beta Actives Jog For Jill to Beat Lung Cancer

On Super Bowl XLV Sunday, twenty Cal Beta brothers donned their most athletic attire and participated in the Second Annual Jog For Jill Fundraiser. The event honors Jill Costello, the former coxswain of the 2010 Pac-10 championship Cal Women’s Crew team, who passed away from lung cancer in June 2010.

In spite of her illness and courageous battle that included 22 chemotherapy sessions and 14 days of radiation treatments, Costello remained an active member of the Golden Bear team that finished second at the 2010 NCAA Championships. She was also named 2010 Pac-10 Athlete of the Year. Jill was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (www.lungcancerfoundation) sponsors the event with the net proceeds going towards lung cancer research and patient support. Lung cancer is still the No. 1 cancer killer, taking more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, melanoma and kidney cancers combined. Over 450 people a day die of lung cancer in the U.S.

Through personal donations and sponsorships from friends and family, Cal Beta actives were able to raise just under $1,000 towards this worthy cause. This strong showing helped solidify SAE Berkeley’s reputation as the leading Cal fraternity concerned with philanthropy.
