Roundhill Luncheon a Success

Some 43 Cal Beta brothers from the 1940’s and 1950’s and their wives and significant others enjoyed a luncheon at Round Hill Country in Alamo, California on July 21, 2011.

The festivities started out with the arrival of the Cal Straw Hat Band playing a number of Cal fight songs to get us into the spirit. That was a treat provided by Cynthia Cranmer Erb, a former Cal marching band member, who introduced her father Lee Cranmer Jr. who flew up from Southern California to talk about his father, Cal Beta SAE Lee Cranmer, who was a main stay of Andy Smith’s Cal Wonder Team of 1920 that went through the season undefeated, finishing off Ohio State 28-0 in the Rose Bowl. Lee brought with him material from his father’s years at Cal where he was given the Iron Man Award, having played the full sixty minutes of every game that season. We also learned that Lee Cranmer’s brother, George, also a Cal Beta SAE in the 1920’s was the captain of the championship crew team.

Brother Mike Friedenbach was honored at the luncheon as the latest member of Cal Beta’s 2011 Hall of Fame Class. He was unable to attend the HOF banquet on May 14th and received his trophy at this affair.

The active chapter was represented by former EA Jai Toor and Steve Callaway. Steve thanked the alums for the scholarship money he received earlier this year. He attended the National Leadership Conference this summer and we can expect he will be a guiding light for the actives in future years.

As is the case every year, the luncheon was greatly enjoyed by all and a great way for Cal Betas to keep their fraternal bonds alive.  We have posted a few photos from the event on our online photo album.  If you have any photos that you would like to share as well please let us know.
